Sisters e S.T.E.A.M. attempts to connect the activities and practices of culturally-relevant inquiry-based science instruction with the identified elements of science achievement, critical thinking skills, and prosocial behaviors.

Venneasha Davis

Venneasha Davis is a Science teacher and Instructional Team Leader for 6th - 8th grade at Pittsburgh Colfax K-8 school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She recently received her principal certification, and will soon transition into a leadership role. Davis is also the founder and facilitator of Sisters e S.T.E.A.M. which is a program that exposes middle school girls to S.T.E.A.M. content that promotes personal and academic learning. Designed primarily for African American girls and girls situated in poverty, Sisters e S.T.E.A.M. provides a culturally-relevant science curriculum that transforms the way that girls understand and approach the STEAM careers.

Davis’ mission is to expose girls to inquiry based hands-on science which incorporates real world applications. Her research is primarily concerned with the academic achievement of youth in urban schools, and her work is centered on creating culturally relevant units that blend multiple learning styles. Davis is committed to providing teachers with the skills and knowledge to convert traditional content into lessons that incorporate active learning.
