Fatima Brunson, PhD. is an Assistant Professor of Education at Spelman College. Dr. Brunson earned her doctorate in Policy Studies in Urban Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Her scholarship is used to investigate the types of conditions that support (or detract from) liberatory, culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogies in k-12 schools, and inclusive and equitable approaches within informal learning spaces. This work connects literature on educational leadership and culturally sustaining pedagogies. Currently, she works with schools and districts to better understand how school leaders and teachers work together to enact responsive pedagogies in racially isolated schools and culturally mixed middle schools, high schools, and higher educational institutions. She works with informal learning organizations, like children's museums, to understand how they might include the lived experiences of BIPOC attendees. As well, she provides consultation services while engaging in online training and dissemination of strategies specific to enhancing student engagement in science and math classrooms, through supporting teachers’ adoption of culturally sustaining innovations.
